Matthew Brown – Composer

Matthew Brown is a composer and violist, born in Canterbury in 1985. He learned to play the violin aged six, and began composing aged 9. He studied for a BMus at Canterbury Christ Church University, specialising in composition with Prof. Roderick Watkins. During the course of his studies he wrote music for the University Wind Orchestra, String Orchestra with Alex Rider on harp, Scratch Orchestra, the Canterbury Festival and was commissioned to write a piano trio for the Canterbury Three Cities Association. Upon entering the University he wrote music every year to be included in the annual Viola Day run by Martin Outram, and continues to do so. He graduated from Canterbury Christ Church University in 2010, winning the Cyril Philips Memorial Prize for outstanding commitment to the Music Department.

In 2011-2013 Matthew studied with Prof. Adam Gorb and Paul Patterson for an MMus in composition at the Royal Northern College of Music, kindly supported by the Richard Newitt and Radcliffe trusts. Whilst studying at RNCM he wrote his first song, which was premiered by Rhona McKail and Yshani Perinpanayagam at Sounds New Contemporary Music Festival and later performed at RNCM by Kathryn West and Aaron Parker.

Mike Bacon – Cello Tutor

Mike is the principal cellist of the Leon String Quartet and performs regularly as a soloist, for small ensembles and orchestras. He teaches cello for Kent Music, Dover College, All Sorts Music, The Astor Music School and Your Music School in Canterbury.
