The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe Part 2

In part 2 of a series of posts we join the cast for our first two rehearsals together in order to learn the 13 songs detailed in the script…

With the score completed we are now focusing on learning it together with the cast. Our primary focus is currently learning the songs. There are 13 songs in total within the script, some easier than others.

The cast has shown great talent and enthusiasm in tackling some very tricky rhythmic passages and harmony. The Finale in particular has an unusual harmony based on 4ths and 5ths which differs from conventional triadic harmony. Being able to pitch and maintain your own particular line is always a challenge in singing. We wanted to help the cast as much as possible so we have sent recordings of the songs for them to practice in between rehearsals.

So far the most challenging songs are the solo songs, where closely following the actors’ own interpretations is very important. We look forward to developing this side of the songs, and helping make them an integral part of the characters.
